A newly formed coppice group based at Wigan Three Sisters were looking for things that they could make to raise funds for the group. Creating handmade wooden spoons from the wood they coppice seems like a viable option, so I was asked if I could run an introductory course.
I have been carving spoons and other treenwear for about five years now, so this seemed the perfect opportunity to start teaching others.
We have now purchased the simple tools necessary to take a class of six people at a time, so spoon carving courses can become a regular event at Burscough Community Farm. We can also take the necessary kit to other locations. As our woodland develops, we will have the raw materials we need to make some fine spoons.
Wooden spoon carving is a lovely introduction to green woodworking, and at the end of the session you come out with a usable item of kitchen wear that can give many years of practical use and a lasting memory of the day.
Saturday ‘s session was a success, and everyone went home with a spoon and enough knowledge to split down a log and make more spoons of their own.
