Volunteering

Volunteering at Burscough Community Farm

Volunteers, we need you!

We’re sometimes asked, “Do you want more volunteers at the farm?” The answer has always been YES!

You might want to volunteer at the farm for many reasons, and all of them are valid. BUT, the best reason to volunteer is because you will gain something substantial from it. That could involve any of the following:

  • Making new friends
  • Reconnecting with nature
  • Creating meaningful nature-based arts and crafts
  • Learning new skills – food growing, land management, arts and crafts, etc
  • Putting your existing skills to good use for a good cause
  • Easing your way into employment
  • Building confidence
  • Relieving anxiety
  • Taking home fresh, organic produce
  • Putting something meaningful on your CV
  • Helping nature conservation

There are many more, but these are the ones that readily come to mind.

The point is the farm can benefit you in many ways. We want you to benefit from what you do here.

Don’t think that because we are called a Farm, we only need volunteers to help grow food. If you’ve ever been to the farm, you’ll soon realise that ‘farming’ is not just one of the things we do. It isn’t even the main thing we do. It’s called a farm because of its location and history. We’re here to improve people’s lives, which can involve many different personal goals and individual activities.

In short, we’re here to help you. The farm is just a vehicle for that, and having some good organic produce to take home is just one of many benefits.

Not only are we not just here to grow food, but there are many other ways you can get involved. For example, we need help with:

  • Organising events
  • Construction and repair projects
  • Conservation work (recording species, plants, and animals)
  • Creating habitats
  • Teaching nature-based art
  • Teaching physical activities such as yoga, meditation, canoeing
  • Designing new programmes that benefit our community
  • Driving the tractor to cut the grass
  • Marketing
  • Administration

Again, these are just current things that do with help that quickly come to mind.

When?

The current volunteer days are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, between 10:00 am and 2:30 pm. We usually have lunch around 12:30.  It’s helpful if you arrive at 10:00 am, then we know how to divide the jobs up. Many people come for just a morning or afternoon session; you don’t have to stay for the full opening time.

If you volunteer regularly or want to take part in special projects, there will be other days you can come. We are even looking for volunteer leaders with skills that they can pass on to other volunteers or our Green Social Prescribing clients.

If you want to get involved in some way that benefits you or the community, get in touch using the form below. Let’s chat and see how we can help each other.
